Balance Magazine - The Inclusive Vision of Gender EqualityNEW!
"Our world needs a new vision of equality between men and women -- one that rejects the old extreme of one-sex dominance and lockstep gender roles, and also rejects the contemporary extreme of gender-based hostility and separate standards for women and men. The ideal of full two-way justice, once endorsed by feminism, has in recent times been pushed aside by influences ranging from unenlightened self-interest to the return of 'group-think.' Yet most individuals of both sexes and with a wide range of beliefs on other social and political issues, fundamentally believe in genuine equality and understanding between men and women -- all that is needed is for that belief to be actively supported in the public arena." The purpose of Balance's web site is to help provide that kind of support, through presentation of important ideas and information not now being made widely available, including contributions by readers.

As a result, their success rate is above 85%, and they often invite "graduates" of their 52-week course to return as volunteers to help knock down the denial, partner-blaming, and other abusive behavior demonstrated by every new batterer who enrolls. The tools, resources, and counselling expertise contained on this site are an invaluable resource for those working in this particular area of Domestic Violence.

Domestic Violence in Lesbian Relationships
Acknowledging that domestic violence and abuse exist within the lesbian community is the first step towards helping victims and perpetrators of abuse. Oppression of lesbians and gay men within our society often leads lesbians to look to the lesbian community as a safe and protective haven from a hateful and ignorant world- perhaps providing the only sense of family some lesbians and gay men have. This often means that lesbians who batter go unchallenged, and their victims unprotected; indeed, some lesbian batterers may be well known within the feminist community but are able to continue their behavior because others fear being perceived as destroyers of their own community by revealing this "secret".
Female Initiated Spousal Abuse
...data in Renzetti's book (Sage Publications, 1992) suggests that the incidence of violence in lesbian relationships is at least equal to that in heterosexual ones, but probably even *more violent*. She writes (p.18): Bologna, Waterman, and Dawson (1987) discovered a high incidence of abuse in their survey of a self-selected sample of 174 lesbians. About 26% of their respondents reported having been subjected to at least one act of sexual violence; 59.8% had been victims of physical violence; and 81% had experienced verbal or emotional abuse. At the same time, 68% of the respondents reported that they had used violence against their current or most recent partner and had been victimized by a partner. Similarly, in a survey of a nonrandom sample of 1,099 lesbians, Lie and Gentlewarrior (in press) found that 52% of the respondents had been abused by a female lover or partner and that 30% admitted having abused a female lover or partner. Of those who had been victims of abuse, more than half (51.5%) reported that they also had been abusive toward their partners.
