Last week in Canberra, the Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, released the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s (AIHW) latest report.

According to the report, specialist homelessness services provided accommodation and other support to almost 220,000 people or one in every 100 Australians in 2009-10

S2S Wait List is a convenient and affordable answer to coordinating demand for health, welfare and community services. As a centralised online database, S2S Wait List enable straightforward and equitable responses to client need across the full range of service sectors.

Client demand for services is lodged centrally on S2S Wait List. Requests are then prioritised and made accessible to service networks according to categories of need. S2S Wait List saves time and effort, and ensures that the distribution of sought-after services is fair and efficient.

Connecting people with services

Infoxchange Service Seeker is Australia's most extensive directory of community services, currently containing more than 250,000 records.

Service Seeker is freely available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The directory is readily searchable by agency name, keyword and free text search and can be refined by geographic area.

The information can also be provided in hardcopy & CD-ROM directories and is the basis for the S2S electronic referral system.

Green Peripherals and Components, otherwise known as GreenPC, has now developed as a successful social enterprise initiative of Infoxchange Australia that operates to service low income people on a national basis. 

Green PCs are recycled personal computers that are refurbished and repackaged into usable, Internet-ready computers, and then made available to low-income communities, individuals and community organisations. The only qualification for an individual or family to have access to a Green PC computer is that they be holders of current Health Care Cards or are able to verify their low income status in some other way.

What is Digital Inclusion?

The Digital Inclusion Initiative (DII) aims to ensure that people who are from a disadvantaged background have access to technology so that the digital divide, which is prevalent in our society, is minimised.

Wired Community @ Collingwood  and eACE (Atherton Gardens)

These projects have seen the wiring up of towers at the Collingwood and Atherton Gardens public housing estates, providing an internet connection in each flat and the creation of public computer hubs, creating a space for residents to come and learn to use the internet and access training services and then residents have access to the internet in their homes.

yarraReporter

yarraReporter was established as a capacity building and community engagement program that trains residents in the City of Yarra to become active citizen journalists and engage with multimedia. Workshops are held with participants actively participating in local events and reporting on issues that are important to them and their community.
Language Factory
 
Language Factory engages with residents from public housing and migrant communities who have particular language skills to be trained to become professional interpreters and translators.
 
GreenPC
 
By refurbishing used computers and offering these at a minimal cost, GreenPC not only assists those who cannot access expensive hardware and software, but also helps the environment by recycling old computers. It also offers training in refurbishment of computers, which acts as a pathways to further employment opportunities.
