Knowledge of the several 'golden rules' regarding the eye may
on occasions save a person's eyesight:
- Blurred vision of recent onset requires urgent medical treatment.
- Do not cover or pad eyes unless medically advised to do so.
- Seek prompt medical attention if someone presents with one
red eye as opposed to two red eyes.
- Do not remove large objects (for instance, a nail, piece of
wood) from an eye as the entire eye contents will flow out. Seek
urgent medical treatment.
- Any significant eye problem should be referred to a doctor
or eye specialist.
- A chemical burn (sprays, liquids, vapour, or smoke in the
eyes) requires a continuous fresh water eyewash for 15 to 20 minutes
and urgent medical treatment.
