Cautionary advice

Exercise caution and ensure the client attends for follow-up if the following have been prescribed:

Medication
Information

Warfarin

(Marevan®,

Coumadin®)

Aspirin

(Disprin®,

Solprin®,

Ecotrin®)

These medications are anti-coagulants, i.e. they thin the blood. Alcoholism may lead to a bleeding tendency due to loss of blood clotting substances normally produced in the liver. Ensure clients using these medications have regular medical review.

Indocid®, Dolobid®, Naprosyn®, Feldene®, Voltaren®

Aspirin

All these anti-inflammatory tablets may cause gastritis (i.e. irritation of the stomach). Note that aspirin is an irritant. Alcohol also irritates the stomach and in combination with the above, ulcers and/or a stomach haemorrhage may result.

Sedating medication

(e.g. 'the Pams')

Effects of sedatives and tranquillisers are cumulative. Alcohol is also a sedative and should not be used in conjunction with such medication.
