Thiamine

(Betamin®). Also known as vitamin B1.

Available as small white tablet or injection.

Usually administered for alcoholism due to vitamin B1 deficiency.

Required for the normal functioning of nervous system and heart.

Prescription not required for the tablet. Dosage is one or two per day.

Allergy is possible but rare.

Spirono-lactone (Aldactone®)

Small tan-coloured and peppermint-scented tablet. This fluid tablet is used to remove excess fluid that collects in the abdomen in liver failure.

In liver failure this medication requires regular monitoring as it may cause dehydration, low blood pressure, or an imbalance in body salt.

If overdosed, dehydration, cramps, or drowsiness occurs.
